Hayfever is the name given to a type of allergic reaction to pollen. Despite its name, hayfever is not necessarily triggered by hay, nor is a fever one of the symptoms.
In those susceptible to hayfever, exposure to pollen from trees, grass and other plants can cause the nasal passages to become inflamed and irritated.
Symptoms of hayfever can include:
Hayfever can also trigger asthma symptoms and has the potential of causing an asthma attack. In those with asthma, hay fever may cause a tight feeling in the chest, shortness of breath, wheezing and coughing.
While there is no cure for hayfever, there are many ways of preventing symptoms from developing. Some of these methods include:
When these are not viable solutions, medicine should be considered. Speak to your pharmacist about hayfever treatments, such as antihistamine tablets or decongestants.
If your symptoms don't improve after taking these medicines, or your symptoms worsen, arrange an appointment with your GP to discuss more treatment options.
Nasobec contains a corticosteroid called beclometasone.
When administered through the nose, it works to reduce swelling in the nasal passages, making it easier to breathe.
The inflammation occurs as an immune response to the particles of pollen. Similarly, to any other allergic reaction, your immune system sees these harmless particles as a threat.
In response, the cells in your body fire chemicals called histamine, which cause inflammation.
Beclometasone prevents the cells from releasing the chemicals. As a result, the inflammation and symptoms do not occur.
