Condyline is a topical treatment for genital warts. It contains an antiviral (podophyllotoxin) to fight the human papillomavirus (HPV) which causes genital warts.
For HPV to remain prevalent in the body, it infects a skin cell and causes it to divide, making a copy of itself. As these cells divide, they create a wart. Nearby infected cells maintain the wart, and replace infected cells which die with new infected cells.
The active ingredient in Condyline - podophyllotoxin - prevents the infected cells from dividing, limiting the spread of the virus. This means that when an infected cell dies, another infected cell cannot replace it. Instead, a new healthy cell takes its place. Over time, the amount of virus in the body reduces enough for the immune system to fight the infection, clearing the warts.
Condyline is taken twice daily for three days. 12 hours should elapse between each dose, so apply Condyline in the morning and 12 hours later in the evening.
If there is no improvement after the 3-day course of treatment in the first week, you should not apply more Condyline that week. Your doctor may recommend you take another 3-day course of treatment starting the next week.
One 3.5ml bottle of Condyline contains a month's worth of treatment.
Topical Condyline should be applied to small warts or clusters no larger than 4 cm in diameter.
Before applying the solution, wash the affected area thoroughly with soap and water. Ensure the area of application is dry before applying the solution.
Apply the solution directly onto warts. Avoid getting the solution on healthy skin. If healthy skin comes into contact with the solution, wash the area with soap and warm water.
All medications carry the risk of side effects. It's important to educate yourself on the possible side effects your medication can cause and what to do if you experience an adverse reaction to a prescribed treatment. Always read the patient information leaflet before starting your course of treatment.
Side effects of Condyline may include:
This is not an exhaustive list of side effects. Further information regarding the safety of Condyline, including a complete list of associated side effects, can be found in the patient information leaflet, which comes enclosed with your treatment.
If you experience any side effects to Condyline, inform your doctor or pharmacist.
Do not using Condyline if you are allergic to podophyllotoxin or any of the other ingredients listed in the patient information leaflet.
If you experience an allergic reaction from using Condyline, immediately cease treatment and speak with your doctor or go straight to your nearest A&E department. Remember to take the packaging and any remaining medicine with you so that doctors know exactly what and how much you have taken.
Signs of an allergic reaction include:
Always read the patient information leaflet enclosed with your treatment before you start using Condyline.
Never use Condyline past the expiry date printed on the packaging. The expiry date refers to the last day of the specified month.
Do not dispose of Condyline via household or water waste. Take any unwanted or expired medication to your local pharmacy and ask them to dispose of it safely on your behalf.
Always store medicine out of sight and reach from children and pets.
Always take medicine as prescribed by your doctor.
Never share your medicine with anybody else, even if they are experiencing the same symptoms or have been diagnosed with the same condition as you.
If you apply too much of the solution, wash away the solution with warm, soapy water. Applying more of the treatment will not treat your symptoms any faster. Using too much Condyline over a prolonged period can result in systemic toxicity.
If you or somebody else swallows the solution, seek immediate medical attention by going straight to your nearest accident and emergency department. Remember to take the packaging and any remaining medicine with you so that doctors know exactly what was swallowed and how much.
If you forget to use Condyline when you should, use it as soon as you remember. If it is nearly time for your next application, skip the missed application and use Condyline at the next scheduled time.
Do not use more Condyline solution to make up for a missed application. Using more Condyline will not clear your genital warts faster.
If you feel you might forget when to use Condyline, store Condyline where you are likely to remember to take it, or set a reminder on your phone or smart home device to tell you when you should apply Condyline.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding women should avoid using Condyline as the effect the treatment may have on children is unknown. If you are pregnant, think you might be pregnant or breastfeeding, speak to your doctor before you use Condyline.
Alcohol does not affect Condyline. You should always drink in moderation and avoid drinking more than 14 units of alcohol per week.
You should notice an improvement in your symptoms after 3 days of treatment with Condyline. Your warts should disappear after 4 weeks.
Please inform our doctor of any medications you are taking when being prescribed Condyline to ensure that it is safe for you to proceed with treatment.
Condyline should not affect hormonal contraceptives, such as the combined contraceptive pill, mini pill or the morning after pill.
Condyline can weaken latex condoms and cause them to break. You should not use latex condoms on treatment days and for up to 24 hours after using Condyline. You can use non-latex condoms instead, which are available from your local pharmacy.
While you are suffering with a bout of genital warts, you should refrain from sexual contact until your warts have completely cleared.
Condyline should not affect your ability to drive or operate machinery.
