In plans announced recently by the current health secretary, Wes Streeting, weight loss jabs could be given to unemployed people to help them get back to work.
So far, plans have been unveiled to conduct a “real-world study” investigating how effective weight loss injections could be in enabling obese people to return to work. The five-year trial will take place in Greater Manchester.
Manufacturers of the weight loss injections Mounjaro and Zepbound, Eli Lilly, recently announced a £279 million partnership with the UK government to tackle public health challenges including obesity.
The trial will use tirzepatide, the active ingredient in Mounjaro and Zepbound, and will be run by Health Innovation Manchester, alongside Eli Lilly, the University of Manchester, and NorthWest EHealth.
Although it’s not yet known who the participants in the trial will be, it is believed that around 3000 people in the Greater Manchester area will take part. It will assess the effect of the weight loss drug on weight loss, diabetes, and other obesity-related complications.
Furthermore, the study will also analyse the impact of the weight loss injection on the participant’s employment status, including how many sick days they take.
There are several reasons why this weight loss study is important. One of the main reasons is that obesity costs the NHS approximately £6.5 billion a year and is the second largest preventable cause of cancer in the UK. More than a quarter of UK adults are living with obesity.
While research involving 26 European countries, found that obese individuals are more likely to take time off work because of health issues, and this increases with obesity severity.
The results gathered from the five-year study will demonstrate the long-term impact of weight-loss injections from both a health and economic perspective.
If the results are positive, then it could pave the way for unemployed weight loss jabs to become the norm, or at least care pathways could be implemented to treat obesity.
The full impact of this study won’t be released for at least five years, so if you want to take control of your weight loss journey now, you can.
There are several weight loss treatment options already available for people with a BMI over 30 or between 27 and 30 if you have an obesity-related health problem, like diabetes or high blood pressure.
