Patient Reviews: How Vermox Has Made a Difference

What is Vermox?

Vermox, also known as Mebendazole, belongs to the anthelmintic (antiparasitic) group of medicines used to treat worm infections.

Vermox can be taken in tablet form or as an oral suspension to treat threadworm, along with other worm infections including whipworm, roundworm, and hookworm.

When taken, Vermox kills all the existing worms in your body, which can then be expelled from the body naturally within 3 days.

What is threadworm?

Threadworms (also known as pinworms) are small parasitic worms that grow inside the intestines, typically surviving between 5-6 weeks before dying.

Whilst threadworms can often be symptomless in small numbers, an untreated infection can quickly become difficult to control. Through excessive itching of the anus where eggs are laid, threadworm is easily spread to other parts of the body as well as to other people.

Treating threadworm as soon as possible is important to reduce the risk of the infection spreading, as well as working to prevent the occurrence of other symptoms such as vaginal inflammation or skin infections.

How does Vermox work?

Vermox contains Mebendazole, which works as a preventative to stop worms from absorbing the sugars they need to survive in the body. Typically, those infected with threadworm will only require one treatment in order to kill all the worms.

How long does Vermox take to work?

Once taken, it can take up to 3 days for all the dead worms to pass through the body, by which time you should be all clear.

Although threadworms can only exist for up to 6 weeks in the body, it can be difficult to completely eradicate the infection if proper precautions aren’t taken. Once treated, It's important that those infected, and all other members of the household, maintain high hygiene standards to prevent eggs from spreading and re-infection occurring.

This can be achieved by routinely washing all night clothes and bed linen, maintaining a high level of self-hygiene and ensuring that the house is kept clean at all times to eradicate any existing eggs that may have been spread to surfaces throughout the home. Avoiding the biting of fingernails or any direct contact between hand and mouth can also help to prevent re-infection from occurring.

How do I take Vermox?

When treating threadworm in adults, only one Vermox tablet is required to kill the infection, and this can be chewed or swallowed whole. Although the treatment is 90-100% effective, it may be advised by your doctor or pharmacist to take a second tablet in two weeks’ time to reduce the risk of reinfection.

To treat threadworm quickly and efficiently, you can buy Vermox online from Prescription Doctor today. If you are in doubt about dosage or have any questions about your medication, we advise that you speak with your doctor or pharmacist, who will be able to advise you.

Clearing threadworm eggs from your home

While Mebendazole eradicates the parasitic worms residing in the intestines, the medicine does not kill the eggs which may have been laid during the night. As such, high standards of hygiene should to prevent further infections.

Reinfection of threadworms can be prevented by:

  • Take a bath or shower in the morning to wash away any eggs which may have been laid around the anus during the night. (Showering is preferred to prevent contaminated bath water)
  • Children should bathe separately to prevent the spread of threadworms.
  • Refrain from scratching around the anus or vagina to prevent eggs from being passed on to the fingers.
  • Use a damp cloth to wipe down surfaces.
  • Encourage everyone in the household to wash their hands thoroughly after going to the toilet and before eating, with hot, soapy water.
  • Clear any eggs which may have been spread from shaking clothes and bedding by vacuuming bedrooms regularly.
  • Cut fingernails short and discourage children from nail biting or thumb sucking.
  • Wash fabrics, which may have come into contact with eggs, such as bedding, pyjamas, underwear, flannels and towels, on a high temperature.
  • Change underwear each day and regularly wash them to prevent the spread of infection.
  • Clean all surfaces which may be infected with threadworm eggs, such as faucets, toilet seats, toys and kitchen worktops.
  • Wash family pets which may carry threadworm eggs in their fur.

If you or your child continues to experience symptoms of threadworms after two weeks, speak to your doctor for advice.
