What You Should Know About the Amylase Test

The blood amylase test is commonly used to help diagnose and monitor acute pancreatitis. When cells in the pancreas are injured, amylase concentrations increase in both the blood and urine. The increased levels of amylase will, therefore, indicate a problem with the pancreas such as pancreatitis, inflammation of the pancreas, or the blockage of the pancreatic duct by a gallstone.

What Does the Amylase Test Measure?

The Amylase test combined with other tests can help diagnose multiple health conditions. The Amylase test in particular will measure the following:

  • The amount of amylase enzyme in the blood. As mentioned previously the concentrations of amylase enzyme will alter if the pancreas cells are damaged.
  • Amylase concentrations in the peritoneal fluid, which is a fluid commonly found between the membranes covering the abdominal cavity and the exterior of the abdominal organs.
  • The concentration of amylase is in the urine because amylase is removed from the body through urine.

What Are the Symptoms of Pancreatic Inflammation?

Having an ill-functioning pancreas may display some symptoms. If you have any of the following symptoms you should consider taking an amylase test immediately.

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Fever
  • Chronic abdominal pain (worsens after eating or radiates to the back)
  • Increased and rapid pulse
  • Loss of appetite
  • Jaundice (yellowing of eyes)
  • Steatorrhea (Loose, fatty, ill-smelling stools)

When Should You Consider Taking the Amylase Test?

Your doctor or GP will recommend taking the amylase test if you have any of the following conditions:

  • Exhibiting symptoms (mentioned above) of an ill-functioning pancreas.
  • Displaying signs of pancreatitis, gallstones, or pancreatic cancer.
  • Suffer from drug abuse or have a severe alcohol use disorder.
  • You have cystic fibrosis.
  • Have been dealing with eating disorders.
  • You have an infection that has impacted the liver, pancreas, or surrounding areas.

Difference Between an Amylase Blood Sample and a Urine Sample

Sample TypeInstructions
At-home Amylase Blood Sample
  • Prick your fingertip and collect a few drops of the blood into the tube that comes with your home test kit.
  • Label the tube and place it in the envelope to send back to the Laboratory.
  • Clean the fingertip using an alcohol wipe and if necessary apply a bandaid.
  • Expect results within 1-2 working days.
Urine Sample for Amylase Test
  • Begin with washing your hands. Clean your genital area with the help of a cleansing pad.
  • Urinate a little into the toilet after which you need to urinate into the cup provided. The cup has markings on it and will indicate how much urine is required.
  • Wash your hands and return the cup to a healthcare provider.
  • Expect results within 1-2 working days.

Medications That Might Impact The Results of Amylase Test

Certain prescription and over-the-counter medications can directly alter your amylase test results. Some of these include:

  • Aspirin
  • Corticosteroids
  • Diuretics (water pills)
  • Indomethacin (an NSAID)
  • Opioids
  • Oral contraceptives (commonly known as birth control pills)

Remember to always consult your doctor or healthcare provider before taking the amylase test to ensure accurate and effective results.
