Buy Infrared Thermometers Online

Infrared (IR) thermometers are electronic devices which can accurately determine the temperature from a distance. They are used medically to determine whether a person has a fever without requiring physical contact.

Infrared thermometers are sometimes referred to as non-contact thermometers, laser thermometers (referring to the laser which is used for focussing) or temperature guns.

This can be useful in diagnosing conditions such as Flu or Covid-19 while minimising the risk of infection. Not only can this digital thermometer make taking a temperature more hygienic, it can also make the process easier and less stressful for children and babies.

Batteries are included with our digital IR thermometers, so you can use them straight out of the box.

How do Infrared thermometers work?

Infrared thermometers work by detecting the amount of infrared radiation being emitted by an object. Infrared is a type of electromagnetic waveform which is outside the scope of visible spectrum. Just like other light, infrared can be reflected or absorbed.

Infrared radiation is often emitted as heat and is therefore a good indicator to measure the temperature of an object. So long as the waveform is not obstructed by objects in the environment, the infrared emitted from a surface travels in a straight light.

To make sure that the sensor is picking up the temperature a specific area, the thermometer is

When the infrared light hits a sensor (known as a thermopile) inside the thermometer, the signal is converted into a temperature which is displayed on an LCD display.

How to use the infrared thermometer

Before using the thermometer, ensure that the area you are taking the reading from is free from any clothing (such as a hat), hair or perspiration (sweat).

To use the thermometer, simply hold the sensor between 3cm and 5cm away from the forehead and press the trigger button to take a reading.

You can also use the thermometer to take a temperature from behind the ear. Hold the apparatus between 3cm and 5cm away from the earlobe and press the trigger to take a reading.

The infrared thermometer can also be used to take temperatures of baby milk, bath water and ambient room temperature.

The reading will appear on the LCD display at the back of the device.

The LCD display is backlit and will illuminate red, amber or green depending on the reading.

The readings that you take are stored into memory and can be accessed later, should you need to compare the temperature readings.

Benefits of an infrared thermometer

Infrared thermometers have many benefits over traditional thermometers and have a number of different uses.

Firstly, infrared thermometers do not require contact making them both hygienic and non-intrusive. Unlike in-ear and oral thermometers, which can cause distress in children, the infrared thermometer can take an accurate measurement without the need of being held in the mouth or the ear.

Moreover, due to the fact that the infrared thermometer requires no contact, you can take a temperature of multiple people in your household without the need of sterilising the thermometer each time. This can also protect you from contracting viruses which can be spread through physical contact, such as colds, flu and Covid-19.

Unlike traditional thermometers, which contain an expanding liquid, the digital display of the infrared thermometer is accurate and easy to read, even in low light. The liquid crystal display can illuminate in three colours to inform you how high the temperature is.

While other thermometers are specifically designed to measure internal body heat, the infrared thermometer can measure internal body temperature, surface temperature of objects and the ambient temperature of a room.
