Fybogel can be used to increase the amount of fibre in your diet to prevent constipation, and can help to relieve constipation by bulking up the stools in the intestines.
While constipation is rarely a serious condition, it can be distressing and painful in some cases, and is a common cause of haemorrhoids.
In people with haemorrhoids (piles), Fybogel can make it easier to pass stools and relieve the pressure put on the piles.
In addition to relieving the pain of going to the toilet while you have piles, Fybogel can help to prevent further haemorrhoids from developing due to constipation.
Constipation can happen to anyone at any age, though some people may be more prone to experiencing constipation than others.
Common causes of constipation include not eating enough fibrous foods like fruits, vegetables and cereals, not drinking enough water, or living a sedentary lifestyle.
Putting off the urge to go to the toilet can cause your body to draw water from your bowels, resulting in constipation.
Some medicines, particularly pain relief medicines like opioids and NSAIDs, and diuretics (water tablets) used to treat conditions such as high blood pressure, can cause constipation.
If you suspect a medicine you have been prescribed is causing your constipation, speak to your doctor. Do not stop or adjust the dosage of any medication you take without first speaking to your doctor.
Constipation is common among pregnant women, due to hormonal changes. If you are concerned about constipation during pregnancy, speak to your doctor for advice.
You can treat constipation naturally by drinking more fluids throughout the day, eating more fibre and exercising regularly.
Cutting down on caffeine and alcohol can also help, as these have a mild diuretic effect, meaning they cause your body to expel more water than usual.
Generally, eating a healthy diet full of fruit and vegetables, staying hydrated and exercising regularly, are usually enough to prevent constipation. Eat at regular times and have a routine of your bathroom habits.
Some foods, such as figs, prunes and dates, can have a laxative effect and may be helpful in relieving constipation.
Going for a walk or a run can help to move your bowels along - but remember to keep hydrated by drinking plenty of water while exercising.
Reducing stress and anxiety can also help you regulate your bowels. For some people, stress and anxiety can contribute to constipation.
The active ingredient of Fybogel is ispaghula husk.
Ispaghula husk is a plant-derived, bulk-forming laxative. It treats constipation by increasing the volume of faeces within the intestines. This fibre becomes more viscous when it comes into contact with water in your gut, increasing the faecal matter. When the faeces become large enough, they press against the walls of the bowel, stimulating the muscles which surround the bowel to move the faecal matter along.
Fybogel Mebeverine - another formulation of Fybogel - contains a muscle relaxant called mebeverine in addition to ispaghula husk. The combined actions of these two ingredients help to make the passing of stools easier when you are constipated.
Fybogel usually takes 2 to 3 days to start working to relieve constipation.
If you not notice an improvement in your condition after taking Fybogel for 1 week, speak to your doctor.
Always read the patient information leaflet before taking Fybogel.
Fybogel should be taken after a meal, and at least 1/2 an hour to 1 hour before or after taking other medicines.
The recommended dose for adults is 1 sachet in the morning and 1 sachet in the evening.
When opening Fybogel sachets, take care not to inhale the powder. Inhalation of the powder can cause allergic reactions.
1. Empty the contents of a sachet into a glass and add at least 150ml (1/4 pint) of cold water. If you do not mix the Fybogel with enough water, chest pain, vomiting or difficulty swallowing may occur.
2. Stir the mixture until all the granules have completely dissolved.
3. Once thoroughly mixed, drink the solution straight away.
Do not take Fybogel within an hour before going to bed.
If you forget to take Fybogel when you should, skip the missed dose and take your next dose at the usual time.
Do not take more Fybogel to make up for the dose you missed.
If you accidentally take more Fybogel than you should, make sure to drink plenty of fluids. If you are unsure how much of the medicine you are supposed to take, speak to your doctor or a pharmacist.
Taking more Fybogel will not treat your constipation any faster, but can increase your risk of side effects.
Before you take Fybogel, read the patient information leaflet supplied with your medicine. The leaflet details instructions on how to use and store Fybogel, as well as important safety information including side effects and who shouldn't take Fybogel.
If you have any concerns about anything you read in the patient information leaflet, seek advice from your doctor or a pharmacist.

Fybogel should be taken for as long as your constipation lasts, or for as long as your doctor has prescribed it.
Most people will only need to take Fybogel for up to 1 week. If your condition does not improve after taking Fybogel for 1 week, speak to your doctor.
