What is Famvir for Cold Sores?

Famvir is an antiviral medication specifically formulated to manage and treat outbreaks of cold sores caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV-1).

Early treatment with Famvir can help to reduce the severity and duration of a cold sore outbreak.

Understanding Symptoms of Cold Sores

The symptoms of a cold sore outbreak may include:

  • Tingling sensation around the mouth
  • Formation of small fluid-filled blisters
  • Mild to moderate pain around the affected area
  • Swollen lymph nodes

How Does Famvir Treat Cold Sores?

Famvir contains the active ingredient famciclovir, which is metabolised into penciclovir. This inhibits the viral replication process, thereby allowing your immune system to contain the outbreak more effectively.

How to Take Famvir for Cold Sores?

For cold sore treatment, the recommended dose of Famvir is usually one 125 mg tablet taken twice a day for five days. However, consult your doctor for personalised dosage instructions. Take the tablets with a full glass of water.

Famvir Side Effects and Precautions

While Famvir is generally well-tolerated, it may have some side effects. It's crucial to familiarise yourself with the patient information leaflet included in your medication package.

Common side effects when treating cold sores with Famvir include:

  • Headache
  • Itching
