The Pulmicort Turbohaler is a preventer inhaler which contains budesonide in a dry powdered form and is used to prevent asthma symptoms. You should take your preventer inhaler daily.
The medicine is available in 100mcg, 200mcg and 400mcg dosages. Depending on your medical history and the severity of your symptoms, your doctor will prescribe the most appropriate dosage for you.
It is only available on prescription and can only be prescribed if you have been previously diagnosed with asthma.
Pulmicort Turbohalers are intended to treat inflammation of the airways caused by asthma. The inflammation is caused by an autoimmune response to triggers such as:
When one of these triggers affects the body - often through inhalation, histamines, leukotrienes, and cytokines are released. This caused inflammation in the airways and increases the amount of mucus produced in the lungs and airways, reducing airflow to the lungs.
Pulmicort's active ingredient, budesonide, is a corticosteroid which prevents inflammation and mucus secretion. Subsequently, the airways remain open and clear, making it easier to breathe.
Pulmicort begins to work within 24 to 48 hours, though the full effects may not be apparent until after a few weeks of continuous use.
The Turbohaler device is easy to use.
Before using your inhaler, check the number of remaining doses left.
Before using your Turbohaler for the first time, you need to prime it.
To prime your Turbohaler, hold the inhaler upright with the mouthpiece pointing upwards.
Carefully remove the cap.
Turn the coloured base as far as it will go in one direction and then as far as it will go in the other direction. If done correctly, you should hear a click. It does not matter which direction you turn the base first.
